09e50b27ed cmake: handling of space-separated EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS 
COMPONENT_DIRS and EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS should be defined as CMake
lists, using 'set' or 'list' commands. Some applications written
for earlier versions of ESP-IDF used to define these variables as
space separated strings.

For example, the following is correct:

  set(EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS path/to/components path/to/more/components)

The following is not correct:

  set(EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS "${EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS} component1")
  set(EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS "${EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS} component2")

The string "component1 component2" may indicate a single directory
name with a space, or two directory names separated by space.

However due to the fact that such way of defining EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS
was supported in IDF 4.3 and earlier, we need to provide backward
compatibility for it.

This commit introduces a new script, split_paths_by_spaces.py, which
is invoked if EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS or COMPONENT_DIRS variable contains
spaces. The script tries to determine if each space should be
interpreted as a separator or as part of the directory name.

When this cannot be done unambiguously, the script reports an error.

In all cases when space separators are detected, the script reports
a warning, and prints instructions for fixing the CMakeLists.txt.

Breaking change in this commit: specifying non-existent directories
in COMPONENT_DIRS or EXTRA_COMPONENT_DIRS is no longer allowed.

8da98b864d build system: pass semicolon-separated directory lists to kconfig 
New —-list-separator argument of confgen.py and
prepare_kconfig_files.py is used to select which character is used
as list separator. For compatibility with esp-docs, we still keep
support for space separator. Otherwise esp-docs would have to choose
the separator depending on the IDF version.

71a884571c cmake: add idf_component_optional_requires utility function 
It can be used in component CMakeLists.txt files when adding "weak"
dependencies between component. A "weak" dependency from A to B is
similar to target_link_libraries(A PRIVATE B), but it gets added only
if B is included in the build.
Use it instead of specifying B as part of PRIV_REQUIRES when the
component can be built (even if with reduced functionality) without
component B being available.

7fc7c49e5d crypto: allocate all DMA descriptors to DMA capable memory. 
These were previously placed on the stack, but the stack could be placed in
RTC RAM which is not DMA capable.

Memory check (leaks and heap tracing) functions for unit tests
now have a separate file now and are renamed for more consistency.

BREAKING CHANGE: renamed memory check function names which may be used

0baf2c43cc Build: CMake compiler flags will be set, regardless of the cache status 
Defining CMake variables from the command-line or from another CMake project,
such as `-DCMAKE_C_FLAGS= -DCMAKE_CXX_FLAGS=`, caused a link failure as ESP
CMake was unable to set its proper compilation flags.
Additional CMake compiler flags can now be provided by another project.

c097e6bcab mbedtls: fix hardware MPI (bignum) related regression 
In commit de22f3a4e5, combination of
hardware and software MPI (bignum) related approach was used to
work around chip (e.g. ESP32-C3) limitation of max 3072 bits support.

This was done using linker "--wrap" flag but since the relevant API is
being used in same translation (compilation unit), hardware mode was not
getting used in some cases (e.g., RSA key generation).

This commit modified internal mbedTLS API and makes software+hardware
combination deterministic.

9b3796d2f1 freertos: Add portTRY_ENTRY_CRITICAL() and deprecate legacy spinlock fucntions 
Add TRY_ENTRY_CRITICAL() API to all for timeouts when entering critical sections.
The following port API were added:
- portTRY_ENTER_CRITICAL()
- portTRY_ENTER_CRITICAL_ISR()
- portTRY_ENTER_CRITICAL_SAFE()

Deprecated legacy spinlock API in favor of spinlock.h. The following API were deprecated:
- vPortCPUInitializeMutex()
- vPortCPUAcquireMutex()
- vPortCPUAcquireMutexTimeout()
- vPortCPUReleaseMutex()

Other Changes:
- Added portMUX_INITIALIZE() to replace vPortCPUInitializeMutex()
- The assembly of the critical section functions ends up being about 50 instructions longer,
  thus the spinlock test pass threshold had to be increased to account for the extra runtime.

b246ec86f3 ldgen: override LC_ALL to C before running objdump 
When using a Linux system configured with `zh_CN.UTF-8` as `$LANG`,
and running raw cmake command to build the project (rather than using
`idf.py build`), output of objdump will be Chinese
(like `在归档文件 libesp_pm.a 中`), resulting in parsing error
`pyparsing.ParseException: Expected "In archive" (at char 0), (line:1, col:1)`
at entity.py line 129.

This commit forces objdump to use raw locale setting (`C`), to ensure
it always make English output that's able to be parsed.

5962a7e931 wear_levelling: move tests from unit-test-app to a component test app 
* Migrate test cases from IDF test runner to Unity fixture.
* Tighten heap checks in the test case a bit.
* Run formatting script on test_wl.c
* NEW: Define 4 test configurations, including configs with 512 byte
  sector size. Previously these configs weren't tested in CI.
* NEW: The test app only runs for ESP32 and ESP32-C3 (one chip for
  each architecture). The component is pretty high level so we don't
  need to test it for each chip. This reduces the load on CI.

0c758c8557 usb: Fix how the HCD handles sudden disconnection 
This commit fixes how the USB Host HCD handles sudden disconnections.

Bugs:
- HW channels remain active when the port suddenly disconnects, and
previously the channel would be disabled by setting the disabled bit,
then waiting for a disabled interrupt. However, ISOC channels do not
generate the disabled interrupt when the port is invalid, thus leading
to tasks getting indefinitely blocked in hcd_pipe_command().

Fix:
On a sudden disconnection, forcibly treat all channels as halted even
if their HCCHAR.ChEna bit is still set. We do a soft reset after a port
error anyways, so the channels will eventually be reset.

884a6b17cc spi_flash: No CPU release time for an erase operation when OS is not running 
During the early start, the virtual eFuse mode can call erase operations when OS is not yet running.

Possible workaround: CONFIG_SPI_FLASH_YIELD_DURING_ERASE=n

Fixed for the legacy flash driver as well.

fb22c1f182 fatfs: Implementation of disk_status nad disk_initialize for SD/MMC card 
FATFS provides a disk status and disk initialize callback which were not
implemented. Implementation has very low impact on SD/MMC speed and
fixes issues, when trying to open file when SD card was removed from
slot and not deinited.

If disk_status returns STA_NOINIT, it will always continue with
disk_initialize. If that returns 0, it will continue like everything is
working normally. So there has to be the same check as in disk_status.
Return of disk_initialize is always checked like this for STA_NOINIT or
STA_PROTECT so if command fails, we return the STA_NOINIT.

if (stat & STA_PROTECT) return FR_WRITE_PROTECTED;

dffb92e45f System/Security: wrong check of the Memprot feature in esp_restart()/panic_restart() 
esp_restart()/panic_restart() never resets the Digital system (so far required only by the Memprot feature) as there's a typo in the corresponding #define:
it checks CONFIG_ESP_SYSTEM_CONFIG_MEMPROT_FEATURE instead of CONFIG_ESP_SYSTEM_MEMPROT_FEATURE.
Issue fixed.

4846222102 freertos: update freertos folder structure to match upstream 
The following changes have been made:
1. All FreeRTOS kernel source files are now placed in the
   freertos/FreeRTOS-Kernel folder to match with the upstream folder structure.
2. All kernel include files are now placed in freertos/FreeRTOS-Kernel/include.
3. All port files are now placed in freertos/FreeRTOS-Kernel/portable.
4. All additions/customizations are placed in freertos/esp_additions.
5. All other miscellaneous files (README, License files etc.) are moved to
   freertos/FreeRTOS-Kernel folder to match with the upstream.
6. Updated esp-cryptoauthlib to latest commit to resolve FreeRTOS
   include dependencies.

ac0cbebb89 ringbuf: Fix bug where comparision between a signed and unsigned operand resulted in incorrect free size for no-split/allow-split buffers 
This commit fixes a bug in no-split and allow-split ring buffers free buffer size calculation.
When the free size available in the buffers less than the size of one item header,
the function prvGetCurMaxSizeNoSplit/AllowSplit() incorrectly returned the maxItemSize instead of 0.
This is due to the comparision between a negative and a positive value
where both operands are treated as unsigned during the comparision operation,
thereby treating the negative operand as a large integer.

Also added new unit tests to test buffer-full and almost-full conditions
where this scenario is likely to be hit.

1222f6dd3a esp_ringbuf: Fix assertion xQueueGenericSend queue.c:818 
The release of the semaphore indicating the item was successfully sent must be the last semaphore released.  The receiver may be in another task and may delete the Ringbuffer (such as with a return code across tasks design pattern) if they are through with the Ringbuffer.

The function xRingbufferSendAcquire followed by xRingbufferSendComplete had the semaphores released in the proper order and that same pattern should have been used in xRingbufferSend and xRingbufferSendFromISR.  This commit fixes this order.

Issue (IDFGH-6030) #7716 describes the problem in more detail.

7b91343ca7 lwip: Fix ping socket create to allow for fd=0 
0 is a valid socket description, so should be accepted after we create a
socket. In IDF, though, it's just a theoretical issue, as customers have
to configure:
* FD_SETSIZE = CONFIG_LWIP_MAX_SOCKETS (from makefiles)
* CONFIG_VFS_SUPPORT_IO = n (from menuconfig)

(this configuration is currently broken, but if we adjust the IDF here
and there we could reproduce the issue)

d6f2fa4bab freertos: Remove critical nested macros 
This commit removes the following critical nested macros as follows:

- portENTER_CRITICAL_NESTED()
- portEXIT_CRITICAL_NESTED()

They are replaced with portSET_INTERRUPT_MASK_FROM_ISR() and
portCLEAR_INTERRUPT_MASK_FROM_ISR() which are the proper FreeRTOS interfaces.

Created a portmacro_deprecated.h for each port to contain deprecated API
that were originally from portmacro.h

For some of the MSPI high frequency setting (e.g. 80M DDR mode Flash or PSRAM), timing tuning is required.
Certain delays will be added to the MSPI RX direction. When system clock switches down, the delays should be
cleared. When system clock switches up, the delays should be restored.

d93b53b9e5 newlib: provide missing atomic libcalls 
Provide emulated atomic load & store libcalls for u8, u16 & u32 integer
types. This is required when building with Clang as llvm does not lower
these operations to native load / stores, where as gcc does.

Provide `sync_lock_test_and_set` atomic implementations for all
supported integer types.

336de29413 Examples/pppos_client: Fix manual parsing to accept unexpected lines 
Regression from a90817cda0 that caused
parsing exit in case of an unexpected result found (line handler
reported ESP_FAIL). Prevously if any error found in the line handler we
just posted an unexpected event, but continued with parsing. Fixed by
allowing for further parsing.

This feature was added when we thought that target components might be
added out of IDF tree. That never became possible, and with recent
changes in IDF architecture it is unlikely that this feature will be
necessary any time soon. Remove it, simplifying the code.

14e600801e cmake: allow selection of clang based toolchain 
This is an experimental feature intended at the moment for ESP-IDF
developers only.

If IDF_TOOLCHAIN=clang environment variable or CMake variable is set,
use toolchain-clang-esp32xx.cmake instead of toolchain-esp32xx.cmake.

These changes aren't sufficient to actually build any IDF project with
clang; subsequent commits add a few workarounds required to do this.

Toolchain files are added for esp32 and esp32s2, which are the targets
supported in our llvm-project fork at the moment.

0912df611f freertos: updated the location of FreeRTOSConfig.h 
Moved FreeRTOSConfig.h from include/freertos to include/esp_additions/freertos.
Updated FreeRTOS.h file to include FreeRTOSConfig.h without the
freertos/ prefix to match with the upstream file.
Renamed architecture specific FreeRTOSConfig.h files to FreeRTOSConfig_arch.h

soc/ll: workaround compiler bug that generate 8/16 bits inst instead of 32 bits one 
update all struct headers to be more "standardized":

- bit fields are properly wrapped with struct
- bitwidth sum should be 32 within same struct, so that it's correctly padded with reserved bits
- bit field should be uint32_t
- typedef volatile struct xxx{} yyy;: xxx must exists. refer: https://github.com/espressif/esp-idf/pull/3199

added helper macros to force peripheral registers being accessed in 32 bitwidth

2f811b7975 cmake: sort lists obtained from file(GLOB) 
CMake sorts result of file(GLOB) command since version 3.6.0:
https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/cmake/-/commit/edcccde7d

Since ESP-IDF sets cmake_minimum_required version to 3.5, and version
3.5.1 is used in CI, sort file lists obtained from file(GLOB)
manually.

This helps obtain reproducible order of libraries passed to the linker
and to ldgen.

1708febe48 ttfw: fix incorrect length when flush data cache after expect: 
data cache is unicode. while we use bytes in RegEx expect. The index of
matched pattern is calculated with bytes, could be different from
unicode. Now we fix this issue by using unicode in expect.

Add docs subcommand with options:
--no-browser - Prints url for current documentation instead of opens browser with documentation
--language - Select documentation language
--starting-page - Choice section of documentation to open
--version - Choice version of esp-idf
--target - Choice model of your target
